BAA Girls’ Rugby 7’s Championship: A Showcase of Skill and Spirit
On October 17th, the excitement of the 4th Annual BAA Girls’ Rugby 7’s Championship lit up the fields at Walkerton District Community School (WDCS). With over 150 young athletes competing, the event brought together new comer teams: Georgian Bay C.S., John Diefenbaker SS, and WDCS, alongside Owen Sound DSS, Kincardine DSS, St. Mary’s CHS, and Walkerton Sacred Heart HS.
The level of play in Bluewater’s girls’ rugby is among the finest in Ontario, and this year was no exception. The athletes demonstrated an impressive evolution in skills, with precision passing, dynamic running, and fierce tackling evident throughout the day. Such improvement reflects the dedication of both the players and their coaches, who are clearly fostering a winning culture.
The action kicked off with intense round-robin play, followed by the semi-finals where St. Mary’s triumphed over Sacred Heart and Owen Sound edged past Kincardine DSS, setting the stage for a thrilling finals matchup. The battle for bronze was no less dramatic; Kincardine DSS emerged victorious in a nail-biter, defeating Sacred Heart 24-15 in a contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
In the championship final, Owen Sound showcased their dominance with a powerful display of rugby. Despite St. Mary’s relentless defense and unwavering spirit, they struggled to contain Owen Sound’s explosive offloading and open-field strategy. The match concluded with Owen Sound capturing their fourth consecutive BAA 7’s Championship, clinching a 22-5 victory.
Kudos to both teams for their outstanding performances and sportsmanship, making this championship a memorable celebration of girls’ rugby in Bluewater.
